KARMIC RELIEF

Yes, it’s that time again. Someone else’s!

But, before we go over Donna, Ethan, and Katie’s assignment for this chapter, do you wanna hear one of the biggest hypocrisies about lying?

Our number one reason for lying—to protect another’s feelings—is itself a lie.

Sure, we care about other people’s feelings. But it’s not the first and foremost reason we lie. What matters most to us (even to the nicest of us) is self-preservation, protecting our comfort level, and our desire to be liked by others and not ever be known as the shallow, judgmental, petty, mean grudge holder we may be in our minds.

However, here’s what’s even more ironic.

Do you actually hate any of my clients thus far in the book? Sure, you may have judged a line or twelve of theirs, but didn’t you, more so, just relate to them? Even like them? And even admire and appreciate them for their unabashed (albeit anonymous) honesty?

Our foibles, issues, lies, and idiosyncrasies are not the problem, I swear. Our hiding of them is. It’s what leaves us not trusting each other and not developing ourselves to become trustworthy.

Truly, people don’t hate me more when I tell them the two-brother story. Of course, many are glad they didn’t date me back then, but I swear they find the ease with which I tell on my dark side a breath of fresh air. They find it enviable that I don’t have an ounce of shame about ratting out Baby Lauren to everyone in my life (you included) and using my bad stories to do good in the world.

What would your life be like if you could be that honest about your dishonesty?

Yes, the fessing up assignment is coming soon to a theater near you. No priest necessary. Just courage, compassion, and a sense of humor.

Okay. So, let’s see how Donna did on the assignment for this chapter, where she had to list out all of her lies.

PS: Just so you know, I SO know that you have many, many, many more lies than you are first going to list when doing this assignment yourself. I often have a client go back and add the ones they purposely “forgot,” before we even begin. Remember, I speak liar fluently. I am one.

In the name of brevity, I’ve kept my clients’ lie lists to about ten each.
